Do Cables Need Protecting in Walls?

Compass Pointing North

All you need to know about cable protection in walls

In the UK, electrical cables often do need protection when installed in walls, depending on their route and the type of wall construction. Here’s a clear explanation based on BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations).

Do Electrical Cables Need Protecting in Walls?
✅ 1. Cables Must Be in Safe Zones
If a cable is buried less than 50 mm from the surface of a wall or partition, it must either:
-Be in a permitted safe zone, or
-Have additional protection.
Safe zones include:
-Vertically or horizontally in line with a switch, socket or accessory
-Within 150 mm of the top of a wall
-Within 150 mm of an internal corner
If your cable is in one of these zones, it usually does not need extra mechanical protection — but…

✅ 2. RCD Protection is Required
Even if the cable is in a safe zone, if it’s less than 50 mm deep, it must also have:
-30 mA RCD protection
Modern consumer units already do this, but older installs may not.

When Cables Do Need Extra Protection
🛡 Mechanical protection is required when:
-The cable is NOT in a safe zone, and
-The cable is less than 50 mm deep
Acceptable protection includes:
-Metal conduit
-Metal trunking
-Earthed steel wire armour (SWA)
-Steel capping does not count as protection

Rules for Metal Stud Walls
In metal stud partitions, cables must be protected so that:
Screws or nails can’t hit the cable
Often done using:
-Grommets
-Cable plates
-Metal conduit
