Do I Need Permission to Install an EV Charger?

Planning to Install an EV Charger

If you’re planning to install an electric vehicle (EV) charger at home, you’ve probably heard about needing DNO approval — but what does that actually mean?

In this post, we’ll explain what the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) is, when you need to notify them, and why it’s an important step in ensuring your installation is safe and compliant.

What Is the DNO?
The Distribution Network Operator (DNO) is the company that owns and operates the electricity network in your area — including the cables, poles, and substations that deliver power to your home.
There are several DNOs covering different parts of the UK, such as:
-UK Power Networks
-Northern Powergrid
-SP Energy Networks
-Western Power Distribution
-Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN)
-Electricity North West
When you install a device that draws significant power — like an EV charger or heat pump — the DNO needs to know so they can ensure the local network and your supply fuse can handle the load safely.

Why the DNO Needs to Be Notified
An EV charger typically draws up to 32 amps continuously, which is a substantial additional load on your home’s supply.
If your total electrical demand exceeds what your main fuse (often 60A or 100A) can handle, there’s a risk of:
-Overloading your supply
-Tripping or blowing the main fuse
-Voltage drops or power issues
The DNO must confirm your supply can safely handle this extra load before installation — or authorise upgrades if needed.

When DNO Notification Is Required
In most cases, your electrician handles this process for you.

There are two scenarios:
1. ✅ Post-Installation Notification (Standard Installations)
If your property’s supply and main fuse rating are suitable, your electrician can install the charger and then notify the DNO within 28 days using the ENA (Energy Networks Association) form.
This is called a “connect and notify” process.
Most homes with a 100A main fuse fall into this category.
2. 📝 Pre-Installation Approval (If Load Is Too High)
If your home has a 60A main fuse, multiple chargers, or other high-load equipment (like heat pumps or electric showers), your electrician must apply for DNO approval before installing the charger.
The DNO may then:
-Approve the installation as is
-Request smart load management to control demand
-Upgrade your main fuse or service head before installation
No installation should take place until this approval is granted.

How Your Electrician Determines This
Before installation, your electrician will perform a maximum demand assessment and check:
-The rating of your main fuse
-The supply type (single-phase or three-phase)
-Any existing high-power devices
-Whether smart load management is needed
They’ll then complete the ENA EV Charger Notification Form, which covers details of the property, supply, and charger model.

What Happens If You Don’t Notify the DNO
Skipping DNO notification is not just bad practice — it’s against regulations.
Without proper approval:
-The installation could be deemed non-compliant with BS 7671
-You could invalidate your charger’s warranty
-Your home insurance might be affected if there’s an electrical fault
-The DNO could disconnect your charger if it’s found to be unsafe
Always ensure your installation is carried out by a qualified, NAPIT or NICEIC-registered electrician who will handle all DNO communication for you.

What Documentation You’ll Receive
After installation, you should receive:
-Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC)
-Building Regulations Compliance Certificate (Part P)
-DNO Notification Confirmation (where applicable)
These documents prove your installation is safe, legal, and compliant.

Can Smart Load Management Avoid DNO Delays?
Yes — in many cases, using smart load management (which automatically adjusts the EV charger’s draw to stay within your supply limit) means the DNO can approve the installation more easily.
It’s often the best solution for homes with limited supply capacity or where the DNO is slow to upgrade fuses.
