How to Safely Power Your Garden Office or Shed

With more people working from home and spending time outdoors, garden offices and sheds are becoming popular spaces for work, hobbies, or relaxation.
But before you plug in a heater or run an extension lead down the garden, it’s important to know how to power your outbuilding safely

Here’s everything you need to know about getting electricity to your shed, summerhouse, or garden office — the right way.

Why You Shouldn’t Use an Extension Lead Long-Term:

Many homeowners start by running a long extension cable from the house to the shed — but this is not a safe or permanent solution.

Extension leads aren’t designed for outdoor use over long distances, and can cause:
Overheating and fire risks
Tripping hazards and cable damage
Water ingress leading to electric shock
Non-compliance with UK wiring regulations
If you plan to use lighting, heating, or office equipment in your outbuilding, you’ll need a dedicated supply installed by a qualified electrician.

How a Proper Garden Power Supply Works

A safe outdoor electrical supply usually includes the following components:

1. A Dedicated Circuit from Your Consumer Unit
Your electrician will run a separate circuit from your main fuse board (consumer unit) directly to the garden building.
This circuit will be RCD-protected to prevent electric shock and meet Part P building regulations.

2. Armoured Cable (SWA)
Power is supplied using steel-wire armoured (SWA) cable, buried underground or securely fixed along a wall or fence.
This protects the cable from physical damage and weather exposure.

3. An External Junction Box or Isolator
An isolator switch allows you to safely disconnect power to the outbuilding when needed.

4. A Small Consumer Unit in the Shed/Office
If you have multiple sockets, lights, or heating in your garden room, your electrician may install a secondary consumer unit inside the building to control those circuits separately.
