What are IP Ratings?

IP Ratings explained
If you’ve ever shopped for outdoor lights, garden sockets, or bathroom fittings, you’ve probably seen codes like IP44, IP65, or IP67 on the box.
But what do these actually mean—and why should you care?
As a homeowner, choosing the correct IP rating isn’t just about buying the “best” product. It’s about choosing something safe, suitable for the location, and built to last.
What Is an IP Rating?
IP stands for Ingress Protection.
It’s an international system that tells you how well an electrical product is protected against dust and water.
An IP rating uses two numbers:
-First number (0–6): protection against dust and solid objects
-Second number (0–9): protection against water
Example:
IP65 = dust-tight + protected from water jets.
Why IP Ratings Matter in Your Home
Choosing the right IP rating helps ensure:
✔ Safety
Electrical items used in damp or outdoor areas need proper protection to prevent faults or shocks.
✔ Longer lifespan
Products with the right IP rating resist damage from rain, condensation, dust, and particles.
✔ Compliance
UK regulations (especially for bathrooms and outdoor installations) require certain IP ratings in specific zones.
Common IP Ratings & What They Mean for You
IP20 – Indoor only
Used for standard light fittings and sockets inside dry rooms such as hallways, bedrooms, and lounges.
IP44 – Splash-proof
Suitable for:
-Bathroom zone 2
-Covered outdoor areas
-Porches
Protects from splashing water and small particles.
IP55 / IP65 – Outdoor-ready
Ideal for:
-Garden lighting
-Outdoor sockets
-Security lights
Good resistance to dust and rain, even in windy or exposed areas.
IP67 – Temporary immersion
Suitable for areas exposed to heavy water spray or where items may sit in puddles briefly. Often used in decking lights.
IP68 – Fully waterproof
For:
-Ponds
-Water features
-Permanent submersion
Where IP Ratings Matter Most in UK Homes
1. Bathrooms
Bathrooms are divided into zones depending on how close you are to water.
Products must meet minimum IP ratings such as:
-Zone 0 – inside a shower/bath → IP67 minimum
-Zone 1 – above bath/shower → IP44 or higher
-Zone 2 – surrounding zone → IP44
2. Gardens and Outdoor Spaces
For anything exposed to the British weather, aim for:
-IP65 for general outdoor lighting
-IP66+ for coastal areas or pressure washing
-IP67/IP68 for ponds and features
3. Kitchens & Utility Rooms
Usually IP20 is fine, but near sinks or steam-heavy areas, IP44+ may be recommended.
Do Higher IP Ratings Always Mean Better?
Not necessarily!
A higher IP rating means more protection, but it also means:
-Higher cost
-More seals and gaskets to maintain
-Sometimes unnecessary for indoor use
The key is choosing the right rating for the right location, not the highest number.
A Quick Guide for Homeowners
Living rooms / bedrooms IP20
Bathroom (zones 1–2) IP44+
Shower enclosure (zone 0) IP67
Outdoor wall lights IP65
Garden sockets IP66
Ponds / water features IP68
