What Happens If I Lose My Electrical Certificate?

Compass Pointing North

Can I get copies of my electrical certificates?

Electrical certificates are important documents — they prove your electrical installation or testing was carried out safely and in line with UK regulations.

But what if you can’t find them anymore?

Whether you’ve lost your Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC), Minor Works Certificate, EICR, or Building Regulations (Part P) certificate, here’s what you can do and why it matters.

Why Your Electrical Certificates Matter
Your electrical certificates are your proof of compliance and safety. They show that:
-Your work meets BS 7671 Wiring Regulations
-It was carried out by a qualified, registered electrician
-It complies with Building Regulations Part P (for domestic properties)
You’ll need them when:
-Selling your home
-Renting out a property (landlords are legally required to keep EICRs)
-Making an insurance or warranty claim
-Showing evidence of recent remedial or upgrade work
If you’ve misplaced them, it’s important to replace or reissue them as soon as possible.

Step 1: Contact the Electrician or Company Who Did the Work
The first thing to do is get in touch with the electrician or company who carried out the work.
If they’re still trading, they should be able to reissue the certificate from their records — most electricians are required to keep copies for several years.
You’ll just need to provide:
-Your name and address
-The approximate date of work
-Details of what was done (e.g. new consumer unit, rewire, new circuit, etc.)
💡 If your electrician is NAPIT-registered, you can also contact NAPIT directly — they can often help trace the notification and confirm compliance.

Step 2: Check With the Competent Person Scheme
If the work was notifiable under Building Regulations Part P (for example, a new circuit or consumer unit), your electrician should have notified the work through their Competent Person Scheme.
In that case, you can usually request a replacement Building Regulations Compliance Certificate directly from the scheme provider:
-NAPIT: https://www.napit.org.uk
-NICEIC: https://www.niceic.com
-Stroma Certification: https://www.stroma.com/certification
🏠 You can also check your property’s certificate history at
🔗 www.checkmynotification.com
They’ll usually ask for:
-Your address
-The date of the work (or approximate year)
-The name of the electrician/company
There may be a small fee for replacement certificates, but it’s worth it to prove compliance.

Step 3: For Lost EICRs (Safety Reports)
If you’ve lost an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR), your electrician may still have a copy on file.
If not — and especially if the report was several years old — it’s often easiest to book a new inspection.
This ensures your installation is:
-Still safe to use
-Up to date with the current Wiring Regulations (BS 7671:2018+A2:2022)
-Backed by a fresh, valid certificate
⚠️ For landlords, an EICR must be renewed every 5 years — so if yours is missing or out of date, it’s best to arrange a new one right away.

Step 4: What If You Can’t Find the Original Electrician?
If the company who did the work has since closed or can’t be reached, don’t worry — you still have options.
A qualified, registered electrician can:
-Carry out inspection and testing on the relevant circuit or installation
-Issue a new certificate confirming its current safety and compliance
While it won’t be a reissue of the original, it gives you valid documentation moving forward.

Step 5: Keep Your Replacements Safe
Once you’ve replaced your certificates, store them safely — both physically and digitally.
✅ Keep paper copies in a safe folder with your other property documents
💾 Scan or photograph them and save them securely (e.g. cloud storage or email backup)
📅 Label them clearly by date and type of work
That way, you’ll never be caught out again when selling, letting, or insuring your home.
