What is a Minor Works Certificate?

Whay do I need a Minor Works Certificate (MWC)?
Not every electrical job in your home needs a full Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC).
For smaller, low-risk jobs — like adding a socket or changing a light fitting — your electrician should issue a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate, often called a Minor Works Certificate (MWC).
Here’s what it is, when it’s required, and why you should always ask for one.
What Is a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate?
A Minor Works Certificate is an official document confirming that small electrical jobs have been safely carried out and tested in line with the latest UK Wiring Regulations (BS 7671).
It’s used when the work doesn’t involve installing a new circuit but still needs to be checked for safety and compliance.
Think of it as the “safety sign-off” for minor electrical improvements.
When Do You Need a Minor Works Certificate?
You should receive a Minor Works Certificate for small alterations or additions such as:
-Adding a new socket or lighting point to an existing circuit
-Replacing a light switch or fitting
-Installing an extractor fan
-Moving a socket or switch position
-Fitting a new outdoor light on an existing circuit
-Small repairs to existing wiring
Basically, if your electrician modifies an existing circuit — not installs a new one — an MWC should be issued.
What Information Does It Include?
-The certificate includes:
-The address and description of the work done
-The electrician’s name, signature, and registration details (NAPIT, NICEIC, etc.)
-Test results for the modified circuit
-Confirmation that the work complies with BS 7671 Wiring Regulations
-Date of completion and inspection
This record confirms that the alteration is safe and properly tested.
Why It’s Important
✅ 1. Proves Safety and Compliance
Even small changes can affect circuit safety. The MWC shows the work has been tested and complies with current standards.
🏠 2. Helps When Selling or Insuring Your Home
Buyers, surveyors, and insurers may ask for proof that your electrical system is safe. An MWC provides a paper trail showing professional work.
⚡ 3. Protects You Against Future Faults
If you have electrical issues later, the certificate helps electricians trace when and how the system was modified — saving time and guesswork.
Who Can Issue a Minor Works Certificate?
Only a qualified electrician who is competent to inspect and test the circuit can issue an MWC.
Ideally, they’ll be registered with a scheme such as NAPIT or NICEIC, which ensures their work meets the required safety and legal standards.
