What is an RCD?

Compass Pointing North

Why RCDs matter

If you’ve ever looked in your fuse box and wondered what all the switches do, you’re not alone. One of the most important safety features inside your consumer unit is the RCD — a small device that can literally save your life.

This guide explains what RCDs are, why you need them, and how they help protect your home.

⭐ What Is an RCD?
An RCD (Residual Current Device) is a safety switch that quickly cuts off the electricity if it detects a fault.
It protects you from:
-Electric shock
-Electrical fires
-Faulty appliances
-Damaged wiring
While a normal circuit breaker protects the wiring, an RCD protects you.

⚡ How an RCD Works (Simple Explanation)
When electricity flows normally, the current going out and coming back is balanced.
If something goes wrong — like touching a live wire or a cable getting damaged — the current becomes unbalanced.
The RCD senses this instantly and switches off the power within milliseconds.
This fast reaction significantly reduces the risk of serious injury.

🏡 Where You Should Have RCD Protection
Modern UK homes should have RCD protection on:
✔ All socket circuits
Especially anything used for outdoor equipment.
✔ All lighting circuits
Required under current wiring regulations.
✔ Bathroom circuits
A must for safety around water.
✔ Outdoor circuits
Garden lighting, EV chargers, sheds, garages, etc.
✔ Kitchen circuits
Because of the high chance of moisture and heavy appliances.
If your consumer unit is older, it may not have any RCDs at all.

🧪 How to Test Your RCD
Every RCD has a test button (usually labelled “T” or “Test”).
You should press this every 3 months to make sure it trips correctly.
When you press it:
The power on that circuit should switch off.
You can reset it by switching it back on again.
If it doesn’t trip, call an electrician as soon as possible.

🔧 Signs Your Fuse Box May Need an Upgrade
You may not have proper RCD protection if:
Your fuse box has old-style rewireable fuses
There are no switches labelled “RCD” or “RCBO”
Your consumer unit is metal but still doesn’t include RCD protection
You’ve never had your electrics checked
A modern consumer unit with RCDs or RCBOs massively improves safety and is often recommended during EICRs.

❗ Why RCDs Are So Important
Without an RCD, a fault can go unnoticed until it becomes dangerous.
RCDs help protect against:
-Electric shock from damaged wiring
-Faulty appliances
-Water-related faults in bathrooms and kitchens
-Outdoor electrical hazards
-Electrical fires caused by earth leakage
They’re one of the best safety features you can have in your home.

🔌 In Summary
RCDs are essential devices that protect you and your family, not just the wiring.
If your fuse box doesn’t have proper RCD protection, or you’re unsure, a qualified electrician can advise you on upgrading safely.
